Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh. His father was an unsuccessful architect. He attended the Jesuit Stonyhurst College and earned a medical degree from the university of Edinburgh. However, being a doctor with very few patients, he began writing to improve his income. His main interest was military history. His Sherlock Holmes stories were originally meant as potboilers, and throughtout his life, he claimed to be embarrassed by their success.
