Lauren Roberts Fantasy Series Powerless Trilogy Ends with Fearless

When Fearless, the final installment in Roberts’ bestselling Powerless trilogy, arrived on shelves, it did so under the quiet pressure that accompanies any beloved series nearing its end. Readers came prepared for romance and upheaval—but also for resolution, or at least the promise of it.
For Roberts, finishing the trilogy was bittersweet. The New York Times bestselling author admitted that saying goodbye to a world she has lived in for years was far from easy.
“The series feels so familiar, and I can write Paedyn and Kai with my eyes closed,” she told The Michigan Daily. “These characters are just living in my brain—so it’s very scary to close off that chapter.”
Still, Roberts is ready to move forward.
“I’m excited to step into something fresh,” she said, “where I can take the knowledge and the things I’ve learned and put them into a new series or a new book and really just make it the best I absolutely can.”
That same willingness to embrace growth and uncertainty shapes Fearless, which leaves readers with deliberate unanswered questions—a reminder that for Roberts, endings are less about closure than the promise of what comes next.
The World That Started It All
For newcomers, the trilogy follows Paedyn, a street thief in the kingdom of Ilya, where a devastating plague has left survivors with special abilities and rendered the powerless hunted. Forced to disguise herself as a Psychic to survive, Paedyn’s life unravels when she saves Kai, the King’s Enforcer, and is thrust into the deadly Purging Trials.
In Fearless, the story resumes with Paedyn’s return to Ilya, where she must confront a murder charge and an unwanted political marriage proposed by Kitt, the newly crowned king.
Characters that stay with you
While Roberts found writing Paedyn therapeutic—a release from her own tendency to avoid confrontation—the emotional core of the trilogy ultimately lies in Paedyn and Kai’s dynamic. She believes their appeal comes from the balance between banter and emotional depth. “There’s a quick back-and-forth dialogue, balanced with really delicate, emotional moments,” she said. “Finding that balance is tricky, but I think it’s what resonates with readers.”
In Fearless, that tension intensifies. Even after admitting their love and being forced apart, Paedyn and Kai retain their bantering rhythm, allowing their relationship to endure despite separation.
Questions left unanswered
The final stretch of Fearless is packed with rapid revelations. The pacing is deliberate, meant to keep readers off balance—just as one truth settles, another emerges. Some questions remain intentionally unanswered, including the nature of the Plague and the identity of the Queen of Esram, with answers reserved for future stories. That openness, Roberts said, made Fearless the most daunting book to release. “I kind of throw a lot at you at the end,” she admitted. “But there’s more to come.”
The world of Ilya may still hold untold stories, but Paedyn and Kai’s journey has reached its natural pause. What comes next, Roberts suggested, will be guided by the same emotional honesty and curiosity that defined her debut. If Fearless closes one chapter, it also confirms what readers already suspect: this is an author still very much in the midst of becoming.
